Wintersports Stadium Aalen - Bachelor thesis for engineers

The old winter sports hall in Aalen in the Ostalbkreis district was already demolished in 2009 due to its poor structural condition. More than 10 years after the demolition, Aalen's town society is still mourning the loss of its treasured ice rink in the Greut district, which certainly had a cult status. For many years now, a mobile tent hall has been located on the now fallow grounds in winter to enable clubs and private individuals to enjoy ice sports in appropriate climatic conditions. Despite the existing desire of many Aalen residents for a permanent building, there are no planning concepts for a new replacement building so far.

Within the framework of your Bachelor's thesis, practical and promising ideas for a new building on the fallow area of the old ice rink are to be developed. With this important building block in the area of the Aalen "Sports Campus", the city expects a revival of the sporting and cultural sense of community. Furthermore, the new rink is to be an enrichment for the firmly established Aalen sports clubs, especially the ice hockey and ice skating club. In addition to winter operations, the hall will be used for events and concerts in the summer months. For this reason, a high-quality architectural and engineering solution is required, which is characterised by innovative approaches in the choice of materials, constructive training and a sustainable building services concept. Furthermore, it is necessary to guarantee an ideal natural lighting for the ice rink.
All in all, a supporting structure that is as free of columns as possible and skilfully designed in detail should form a memorable, formative structure for the winter sports hall. Last but not least, the design process should actively plan the basis for a later economic operation of the building. For your planning, please observe the applicable regulations of the valid EnEV and the fire protection regulations. Your building should also be barrier-free.

The task is to be dealt with primarily as individual works. Group work in teams of 2 is possible by arrangement with corresponding additional work and consolidation in constructive detail. The exact location of the building site can be seen on the attached aerial photographs. In general, however, we recommend an independent inspection of the site in Aalen.
